Germany? Not quite!

Recently, I’ve been to Gramado, a 33-thousand-person town in Southern Brazil, to participate in the 2nd Brazilian Symposium on Metallogeny. Inside: metals, fluids, mineral deposits, models… Outside: nice chilly weather, hot chocolate, red wine, fondue and the romantic German style architecture, a legacy from German and Italian immigrants who started to settle down on Serra Gaúcha (Rio Grande do Sul State highlands) back in 1913.

You can easily reach Gramado from Brazil’s major cities, by bus or plane. There are many package tours which include other neighboring tourist towns such as Canela and Nova Petropolis.

What to see and do? Many cultural events, concerts, cinema festivals, flowers, waterfall canyons, vineyard tours and a unique gastronomy.

I recommend winter time (in Brazil, June to August) or the Christmas season when the town is wonderfully decorated into a city of lights.
